ELOs second effort as far as sound quality goes slightly trumps their earlier album. With instruments more refined and distinct among the very orchestral re invisions. Of course with still distored vocals on select tracks for style. Decent dynamics but I believe that aspect is actually worse than their first album. I cant play this as loud at only about 1.8 for comfortable listening.
A good range of low to high end is utilized however and the stereo imaging is quite good. The second effort by Electric Light Orchestra includes the original lineup, although Roy Wood is only on two Tracks (the two Boogies). The most common speculation is that Wood left because of creative differences with Jeff Lynne over the musical direction of the band.

That's easy enough to believe, if one compares the direction ELO went under Jeff's leadership with the direction Woody's subsequent bands took. This album is pure prog-rock, so don't expect the orchestral strains of ELO's later work despite the presence of cellos.
There is no vocoder and precious little fairy dust. One of the signatures of progressive rock is the Long Song.
The songs on ELO 2 are long. Not 'Sad-eyed Lady of the Lowlands' long, but longer than 'Hey Jude.' There are only five songs on the album.
Speaking of song length, one really interesting fact is about the length of 'From the Sun to the World.' The song on vinyl is 8:20.
The Electric Light Orchestra
How long does it take for light to travel from the Sun to the World? You guessed it! Mama is a sad and beautiful ballad that seems out of place on a album which contains songs that sing of the dark side of humanity. The fact that Mama is about to die suits the theme.
'In Old England Town' compares a spaceship to a penis, thrusting up into the darkness with our nuclear waste on board to seed who knows what monstrosity. Horrors also abound in the brilliant Kuaima, whose narrator has killed the parents of the war orphan he has adopted. The rollicking Roll Over Beethoven, ELO's first US hit, gives us a break from the carnage in the other songs. ROB is still a concert favorite, closing out Jeff's every show. In summary, ELO 2 is for two audiences: the 70'S prog rock fan and the ELO Completist who must have everything they have done.
It would be a challenge for the fan of Out of the Blue or Discovery.
Is a strange compilation, a seeming hodgepodge of rarities and oddities that somehow works wonderfully as listening material. Opening with the single edit of 'Roll Over Beethoven,' the CD then jumps headfirst into the depths of the band's vault items, but in the oddest way, assembling three of the bonus tracks - most notably 'Auntie,' the early version of 'Ma-Ma-Ma Belle' featuring on lead guitar - from the expanded versions of Electric Light Orchestra and issued in 2001 and 2003. Those cuts are followed up with rare quadraphonic mixes of 'First Movement (Jumping Biz),' 'Manhattan Rumble,' 'Whisper in the Night,' and '10538 Overture,' all from the group's self-titled debut album. And those tracks, which fill out a body of quad mixes previously issued on the expanded version of the debut album, are broken up by the previously unissued quad mixes of 'From the Sun to the World' and 'In Old England Town (Boogie No. 2),' off of the group's second album, and a live BBC recording of a concert version of 'In the Hall of the Mountain King.' Finally, the 2001 edit of 'Mama,' prepared for the box set, is programmed in the midst of all of that.
If all of this sounds a bit messy and confusing, it is - the previously unissued material was obviously the real reason for the CD, but there wasn't enough of it to fill out a proper anthology, so highlights from the previous sets were included as well. That doesn't mean that it isn't thoroughly entertaining, however - the quad mixes bring out details in the playing and arrangements that were previously hidden, and they also make for fascinating listening (it would be nice to assemble a definitive, complete quad mix of Electric Light Orchestra someday). Additionally, the live track is a good document of 's early live sound, before their shows became vehicles for massive laser-light shows and other distractions, showing off an impromptu jam between violin and lead guitar for a bridge to the finale and completely different from what the band finally did with the song in the studio. Further, the sound is killer throughout, which should be of special interest to American listeners - the catalog on this side of the Atlantic has never received a proper upgrade, whereas in England (where, curiously, the group struggled to find an audience) their upgraded CDs are now getting appended and expanded in new directions with releases such as this.

Recorded at Long Beach Auditorium on May 12, 1974, 's was a limited release in a handful of countries in the mid-'70s. The show was unusually raw and spirited, and the resulting performance is ferocious, like little else the band ever delivered. The material is all rooted in the group's first three albums. 'Daybreaker,” 'Showdown,' and 'In the Hall of the Mountain King' are juxtaposed with '10538 Overture' and robust covers of 'Day Tripper,' 'Orange Blossom Special' (with a solo violin spot), and 'Great Balls of Fire,' with the band's version of 'Roll Over Beethoven' as the finale. The album pre-dates 's emergence as a major international act by perhaps a year, and captures them playing the material upon which their basic sound was formed and cast. 's sinewy guitar playing, in particular, is extraordinary and 's lunatic rolls and fills on 'Roll Over Beethoven' might've made even a little dizzy. The band also manages to have fun with their own history, while anticipating their future, integrating a quotation from what was then exclusively a song, 'Do Ya,' into their version of '10538 Overture.'
